Words for company (poem)

And
in her leisure
the lady finds words
to not quite repent
but nevertheless examine
the bruises and scratches,
the gentle aches
the might-have-beens
the should-have-beens
and the plain did-nots
that vaulted over the why-nots
inexplicably
beyond the moon-stained madness
of her youthful dreams.
She does not quite know
the grammar of patterns cast
With some luck she knits
words from her thesaurus
where sighs have a million shades
Words craft them
into frozen ice cream delights
of eager expressions
thawed by the spoonfuls
and savoured in the company
of elegant friends
on lazy afternoons.
There is a joy when sadness
becomes a museum
of decorative
words
